Senior Controls Engineer I, Strategic R&D

The ICON technology team is adding a Senior Controls Engineer II to the Strategic R&D team in an effort to continuously develop our growing fleet of mobile large-scale construction systems. This role will is based in our Austin, TX office.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Own and deliver strategic development controls projects from concept to handoff to product team with consulting and support thereafter; including motion and process systems among others.
  • Collaborate with other departments to design, develop, and implement control and sensing strategies across multiple areas of the company.
  • Enthusiastically participate in all aspects of automated equipment engineering including mechanical, electrical, control logic, user interface, and safety.
  • Actively participate in equipment design reviews and project status meetings with internal engineers/managers and external supplier manager and engineers.
  • Must be willing to perform a wide range of tasks on a daily basis (e.g. Transition from office work to field work at a moment’s notice).
  • Support systems operating in the field, both remotely and on site.
  • Travel is minimal, however, the ability to travel (including international) on short notice is required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 7+ years of relevant controls development experience.
  • 5+ years of experience working specifically with TwinCAT 3 (or other relevant real-time control systems).
  • Strong understanding and experience in the Industrial Automation and control systems industry.
  • A solid understanding of IP based computer networking.
  • Fluency in some form of real-time control software.
  • A proven track record of delivering projects to end users.
  • A solid understanding of motion or process control techniques in real-time industrial systems.
  • Innovative, driven, out of the box thinker, self-motivated to investigate and implement new ideas, and proactive in overcoming obstacles.
  • A service oriented attitude when in a support role.
  • Must be prepared to work, in part, in extreme environments.

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Prior start-up experience.
  • Simulation and control of dynamic motion systems.
  • Fluency in IEC 61131-3 languages, especially Beckhoff TwinCAT.
  • Understanding of various field buses, protocols, sensors, and actuators (e.g. Ethercat, Ethernet TCP/IP, ADS, OPC-UA, CANopen, IO-Link, RS485).
  • Experience with control system electrical requirements (e.g. 24 vdc, 480 3P VAC, 208 vac, 230 vac, 4-20 ma).
  • MATLAB/Simulink for Twincat 3.
  • Knowledge of Inverse and forward Kinematics.
  • Experience with Object Oriented programming, Object Interfaces and state machines.
  • Advanced IP Networking, including VPN, mobile networks, IoT.
  • Knowledge of non-PLC programming languages, such as javascript, python, C++, etc.
  • Ability to read and understand electrical schematics, and the ability to troubleshoot electrical and mechanical systems.
  • Knowledge of ROS.
  • Industrial safety system experience.
  • Knowledge of database driven software.
