This role is with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. WayUp is partnering with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to hire top talent.

Duties

As a Health Scientist you will:

  • Conduct Scientific Studies, Surveys, Investigations Plans and conducts scientific surveys/studies or projects to identify and solve public health problems;
  • Search, synthesize, and interpret information relevant to public health.
  • Review and analyze studies and projects assessing public health issues in order to make recommendations or processes, procedures and/or policies related to public health programs, practices, and research;
  • Consult on Scientific and Technical Issues;
  • Provide technical advice and assistance to national, state and local health agencies and to various other organizations;
  • Collaborate on programs/projects/studies and coordinates efforts, as appropriate, with other program staff, other CDC Centers, Institutes and Offices, other federal agencies, national, State, local health agencies, and private and non-profit organizations.

Conditions of Employment

Due to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC's) process enhancement to use Shared Certificates throughout the Agency, some of the requirements below may differ:

  • US Citizenship required.
  • Males born after December 31, 1959 must be registered or exempt from Selective Service (see http://www.sss.gov ).
  • May be subject to a Background/Security Investigation. Security clearance level may differ from the position announced when certificates are shared .
  • CDC participates in the USCIS Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program ( E-Verify ). E-Verify helps employers determine employment eligibility of new hires and the validity of their Social Security numbers.
  • Direct deposit is required.
  • One-year probationary period may be required.
  • This position may be subject to a Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Time in grade (TIG) must be met within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
  • In accordance with Executive Order 12564 of September 14, 1986, The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is A Drug-Free Federal Workplace. This position may require a Drug Test and be subject to Random Drug Testing. The position may require the submission of a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment and be subject to reasonable suspicion and post-accident drug testing upon hiring. If required to submit to urinalysis, the appointment to the position will be contingent upon a negative test result.

Qualifications

All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of the announcement.

Basic Qualifications:

Must have a Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education(external link) at the time the degree was obtained.

Minimum Qualifications for GS-11:

To qualify at the GS-11 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-9 grade level, which must include the following experience: identifying and analyzing public health issues and conducting studies and data collection to develop public health solutions.

OR

Have completed 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a PH.D. degree

OR

Have a Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree in a field that is directly related to the duties of this position.

OR

Have a combination of specialized experience and graduate level education that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position.

Minimum Qualifications for GS-12:

To qualify at the GS-12 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level, which must include the following experience: planning and implementing studies and data collection, evaluating public health issues and providing recommendations for improvement based on scientific studies or data.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Promotion potential: Promotion to the next grade level is at management's discretion and is based on your meeting qualifications and time-in-grade requirements, demonstrated ability to perform the higher-level duties, the continuing need for the higher-level duties, and administrative approval. Promotion to the next grade level is not guaranteed and no promise of promotion is implied.

Education

Copy of your transcripts or equivalent documentation is required for positions with an education requirement, or if you are qualifying based on education or a combination of education and experience. An official transcript will be required if you are selected.
